QuestionI love poppies and decided to try some. I bought a few seed packets. However, upon doing some research in my gardening books, it reads that the best way to plant poppies is by direct planting of small plants from flats. I am quite confused. I don't even think my local garden center carries poppies in containers. Why do they sell seeds if this is not the preferred way of planting? As you can see, my questions are many. I would be much obliged if you could help straighten me out regarding this. By the way, I live in North Carolina, Zone 7. Thanks.
AnswerPatricia,
The reason bedding plants are so popular is that the initial growing has been done for you. Just buy the 6 pack, plant the small plants, and enjoy the flowering immediately. It is all about the time factor.
However, as you point out, your local garden center does not carry poppies as bedding plants. This is true for many flowering species. So if you want these plants in your garden you have to sow seed and be patient as the seed germinates and the seedling matures.
So forget about what the books are telling you and plant those seeds.
Good gardening
