QuestionI love poppies and decided to try some. I bought a few seed packets. However, upon doing some research in my gardening books, it reads that the best way to plant poppies is by direct planting of small plants from flats. I am quite confused. I don't even think my local garden center carries poppies in containers. Why do they sell seeds if this is not the preferred way of planting? As you can see, my questions are many. I would be much obliged if you could help straighten me out regarding this. By the way, I live in North Carolina, Zone 7. Thanks.
AnswerThe difference is that, there are annual, biennial, and perennial poppies. The annual and biennial are grown from seed, and will reseed in your garden, everywhere. The perennial is grown from plants or division, or root cuttings.
The annual, and biennial need well drained soil and full sun. The perennial needs extremely well drained soil. Aphids love it.
You are seeding a little late in the season. Early April would have been better, but go ahead and plant. Keep the soil moist until the seeds get established. Full sun.
