QuestionHi there,
I have a yellow allamanda in a plastic pot (I think it's the same thing as a trumpet vine?) that was outside in central Oklahoma through last summer. I kept it inside through the winter, pruned it about 6 weeks ago (pretty radically, I'm afraid), and started putting it outside on warm sunny days. It's outside most of the time now but I still bring it in at night until it gets a little warmer. It's coming along nicely after the pruning and is covered in pretty green leaves now. It bloomed profusely last year but it isn't showing any signs of blooming yet this summer. Do you think it'll bloom this year? Is there anything I can do to encourage it to bloom? These are probably very basic questions, but I'm a total novice!
Thanks for your help!
AnswerFor best results, you should have a greenhouse for winter storage, and a very large pot, because they can become very large. They need full sun, and lots of water in the summer. Don't let it get below 45 degrees. In the winter, water sparingly.
They bloom from summer to autumn. It is still too early for it to put on buds. I would be careful not to prune off the new growth stems. They produce the axillary and terminal cymes of yellow flowers. In late winter or early spring, just thin the side shoots.
I think you are on the right track. As soon as you are able, put it in a place where it will get good light and keep it watered.
