Tomatos

Question
I have 4 veriaties of tomatos in 1/2 wine barrels. The plants are looking great and have lots of blooms, but no tomatos are setting. some of the lower leaves are curling on one of the plants. What can I do to get tomatos? is it possible to over water? There is plenty of drainage.

Answer
First thought is that your tomatoes are too cool. If you are having a cool spring, (average temperature 65 degrees or below) you may have trouble with warm weather crops such as tomatoes. Ripening will be delayed and flavor of fruit will be flat. Cover the plants with agricultural fleece at dusk to hold in extra heat overnight. Remove in the morning. They should do much better when the summer warmth starts.
Plants that do not set fruit may have blossom drop, an envirmental disease. Spray plants with one application of seaweed extract.
Let the plants dry out in-between watering while it is cool. When it gets hot, keep the soil moist. 1 to 1 1/2 inches a week of water. It is critical that your fruit get an even supply of water to prevent problems like spliting,(caused by sudden over water) or wilt (letting them dry out too much, between watering)
It is normal for young plants to loose some of the older leaves as it grows. But if it continues and become damaged, then it could be a disease, and should be investigated further.
Remember to feed them every two weeks and give them full sun.
