QuestionOur soil is reclaimed river land and it is awful so we are starting to pot everything and make raised beds. We can manage most things by catering for different plants with varying depths of soil, but what about runner beans. This is one of our favourite summer veg, but we can't see how to do it. Any ideas?
Thanking you, Myfanwy.
AnswerTrain the 6ft to 8ft tall vines on a wall trellis that is tall enough, or tepee made of bamboo poles, or what ever is handy. The pot should be 14 to 16 inches deep. I prefer to build a box. The soil temperature should be around 60 degrees at planting time. Direct sow the seeds 2 to 3 inches apart. Use a very fertile soil mix. Give them full sun, and plenty of water.
