QuestionI have three Pink Reliance grape vines. I built a trellis on my deck and would like to grow the grapes in pots. Can that be done? Also, I have a book that gives different advice on pruning depending on if they are long cane, medium or short cane. Pink Reliance isn't listed. Do you know which it is or how and when I should prune? One vine has some grapes this year and I have no idea when to pick them. They are green and small. Does Pink Reliance mean they turn pink when ripe or does it refer to the pink leaves?
Guess that is a lot of questions but I need some help here. Thanks, Jerry
AnswerI do not specialize in grapes, so I did some research. If you study the way the growers grow grapes, you will see that the tend to have them growing horizonally not vertically for best results. I mention this because you said you were growing on a trellis. A trellis usually means the plant will be growing up, not out to the side. Your variety is a medium cane. Follow the advice in your book about pruning. The grapes usually don't appear until the second or third year. They rippen around August. They will be pink. Very sweet. A strawberrie flavor with spice.
They are seedless, slipskin. Very hardy. Skin cracking near maturity is a limiting characteristic. I believe they will do fine in a large container for a while. But will eventually show signs of wanting to be replanted in the soil. But as long as they grow and produce fine grapes, then I see no reason why you should not use them in containers.
