QuestionI have two holly bushes, blue prince and blue princess, that I have planted in large containers on my balcony. My balcony faces SW. My problem is, I'm not sure how to care for them. I live in London, Ontario, Canada. The summer temperature varies from 12 degrees celcius (54 degrees F) at night to 36 degrees celcius (97 degrees F) in the day. Winters go as low as -20 degrees celcius (4 degrees F). The lowest and highest temps. are infrequent.
Thank you for your time.
Answeri'm in southern NJ. climate zones 6-8. actually hollies(genus - ilex) are broadleaf evergreens. spring & fall would be the best time to plant(mild temperatures). i have planted them in the summer & winter w/much success also. make sure you water them w/5 gallons of water per week(if no rainfall occurs w/in the week) the 1st year you plant them & during hot dry spells after that. apply a good evergreen fertilizer(i like hollytone by espoma) once in the spring and again in the fall. buy it at a local garden center/nursery and ask for more info on hollies in your area. ask about using a anti-dessicant(wiltpruff, etc.) to spray on them to prevent them from drying out during cold, dry winters.
