QuestionI think I have leaf smut and it has spread across my entire yard due to the spores getting in my dog's hair and him rolling around all over. I took pictures and would like your opinion and also a way to get rid of it. Thanks, Jamie
AnswerFirst, I'd like to know what kind of Grass you are growing. Bluegrass? Fescue? St Augustine? Different Grasses get different diseases.
Now, let's look at your Smut diagnosis, briefly. Please view the closeup photo of this condition at the University of Illinois Extension Service website:
www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/hortanswers/detailProblem.cfm?PathogenID=185
Look like yours?
U of Ill says Annual Bluegrass and Fescues are affected: 'Turf that is 2 to 3 or more years old and locations where pH is below 6.0 are more likely to have Smut. The pathogens grow systemically throughout a grass plant; once infected, a plant remains so for life.'
Let's read that again: ONCE INFECTED, A PLANT REMAINS SO FOR LIFE.
Got that?
This is INCURABLE.
So please view the photos, and get back to me. Thanks.
