orange tree

Question
Will a orange planet grown from seed ever product fruit? If so what is the best way to care for them in a new England climate?

Answer
This being the Fertilizer department, I am inclined to bounce it back to you because I don't know what kind of Orange seed you have -- nor can I even be considered an expert in all aspects of Citrus.  But I'll tell you what I know, at the risk of encouraging more unrelated questions in this column, because I do grow them on Long Island, indoors.

Nothing I know right now would prevent an Orange Seed from growing into a blooming, fruit bearing Tree.... eventually.  It is far quicker to graft a Tree or purchase one already growing, because you will be much older when this Tree eventually blooms.  If you're lucky to live that long.  Just one thing to consider.

One of the problems growing these in the North is that our days are shorter.  The Florida Sun is closer to the equator so it shines longer, 10 or 11 hours in Winter at the Southern tip.  That's almost twice as much light as we get up here.  So even if you're growing it in full Sun all day, the Sun will rise and set with a lot fewer footcandles.  This has got to affect vigor.  So you have no other room for error.  And you'll probably never get the Orange-covered specimen you could grow down South.

Oranges are not completely tender; they will take a bit of frost if hardened off, something I learned because mine had to be lifted by 3 strong men twice a year in and out of the house like large pieces of furniture -- and 3 strong men are not always available when you need them.  Mine withstood windy bursts of chill down to around 22 degrees. Hauled indoors at last, the room they lived in was bathed in Sun but with minimal heat, and they seemed to love it that way.  Temps rarely rose above 50 degrees, and when the pipes finally burst one year in that room, they were pleased as punch with the steambath that ensued.  Silver linings...

Bottom line:  You can grow some very nice Orange Trees up North.  The Oranges are delicious, but not abundant.  The flowers are unforgettable.  And I guarantee you will most certainly be the first on your block with one of these.  But I do not recommend you grow them from Seed, as life is too short, and Trees grow way too slow.  Buy a full grown specimen on your next trip to Florida, and ship it home.  Good luck and keep me posted.

P.S. - please everyone try to limit your questions to the subject at hand.
