Science Project

Question
Hi there,

I would like to know can a plant grow faster by using soda, vineger or water?

Answer
With a pH of 3.0 or lower, Soda is not going to be a tasty treat for ANY plant.  Take a look at the LiveScience page on Soda and see for yourself:

You may not know about pH, but look at it this way:  A 'neutral' pH is 7.0.  Lower than that, and you have an Acid.  Higher than that, and you have a Base.  The lower the pH, the stronger the Acid.  A cup of black Starbucks Coffee is an Acid, with a pH around 5.0.  Orange Juice out of the refrigerator is VERY Acidic, with a pH around 3.4.   But the guys at LiveScience puts the pH of Coca-Cola at 2.5... strong enough to melt the white enamel RIGHT OFF YOUR TEETH.  Which is why people who drink a lot of Soda get so many cavities.

But back to your Science Project.  Blueberries are on the VERY short list of plants that grow best in Soil with a low pH.  Their roots revel in Soil with a pH of 5.0.  That's not even close to the 2.5 of Coke.  What do YOU think will happen to an ordinary plant if you water it with Soda?  Frankly, Tevin, you'll be lucky if that plant only grows SLOWER -- but it probably will be dead!

Vinegar is also very good at killing plants.  If you dilute Vinegar with water, you'll soften the pH.  The more water, the less deadly the pH.  So the plant you water with this stuff may even learn to LIKE it.  Especially if you use only a few DROPS of Vinegar in the glass.

Looks like H2O is going to be your best bet when it comes to plant survival.  Because it's the only thing that won't outright kill your plants without being watered-down.  Thanks for writing.
