Super Thrive

Question
Dear The Long Island Gardener,
I have bought a product called Super Thrive, and I would like to have your opinion on that product.
  Sincerely,
  Sam

Answer
I have seen SuperThrive (and a lot of other products) but I can't figure out what it's made of.  If I don't know what I'm putting on my plants, I'm less inclined to buy something.  Of course, 'trade secrets' are a legitimate business strategy.  But I think I also saw references to a 'patent' and other references to the EPA in its ad literate, and I can find no patent for anything registered as Superthrive, nor can I find a (I think may be) legally mandated EPA registration for a product called Superthrive.

So I have directed an inquiry to the EPA about this product.  It is my understanding that they need to know what something is made of when it's used as fertilizer, to kill weeds or bugs, etc.

My guess is that this is something that is good for your plants, but available in a less expensive generic form.  My guess is also that they are under the EPA radar by somehow wording their promotional messages carefully, so that you read into them rather than them boldly standing up and making claims that would mandate an EPA registration (which is expensive).

The company that makes them has about 10 different names at the North Hollywood, CA address, all with the same phone number.

I'm glad you asked about it.  I'll let you know when I hear back from the EPA.  Then I'll have an opinion about it.  But since you actually have some of this stuff, your opinion would be of interest to me.  I'd like to know what YOU think.  And believe me, so would a lot of other people.  Thanks for writing.  I'll speak w/ you again soon.
