aerating

Question
Is core aerating the best method for Bermuda grass,or is it necessary at all?

Answer
Perfect timing, Clifton!  Actively growing Bermudagrass will LOVE a core aeration treatment right now.  Go out and rent a CORE aerator.  You want the ones that reach down and pull out plugs of soil, not the spikes.  Go over the Lawn twice -- once this way, then right across that way.  You want at least 12 plugs per square foot.  Leave the plugs on the soil surface out to dry, and if you don't like them a few days later, break them up.  You want those plugs of soil to come in contact with the Bermudagrass roots and help break them down.  If you aren't using Weedkillers and Grubkillers and other poisons on your Grass, you have microbes that will munch on dying roots all Summer and break them down into Nitrogen, Phosphorous and other delicious Grass foods.  Your Earthworms will also appreciate that!

If you're contemplating a spike aerator, you should know this: They TESTED spikes and core pluggers at University of Georgia School of Agriculture, and they MEASURED the root depths and water takeup of Grasses after treatment.  Core aeration results: Increase of 25 percent.  Spikes:  Zero.

Let me know if you need guidance on compacted Georgia Clay soil.  I can help you with that too.  Good luck with your aerating.
