Burnt Grass

Question
Hello, I had trouble with my grass, as I tried to fix some yellow spots by putting ferilizer. The next morning the entire lawn became yellow.
How can I fix my lawn?

Answer
You do not mention where you are located, but if you are located in the north, then you should not fertilize during hot summer months.

Fertilizer will not solve yellow spots or a dying lawn. It will only make it worse. I don't know if you can salvage the lawn, but you can try to water heavily for a few weeks to flush the root zone. You may have to reseed or resod.

Yellow spots may appear in summer if cool season grass go dormant due to excessive heat, lack of adequate soil moisture, or due to disease or insect attacks. Fertilizing a lawn in summer is generally not a good idea.

Grass which is normally dark green and which gradually turns light green can be improved by fertilizing, but typically not so with brown or yellowing grass. Even so, you should only fertilize cool sesaon grass in late spring, early fall and late fall. You should not fertilize in summer. If you live in the south with very hot temperatures and grow warm season grasses, then you can fertilize in spring, but apply according to directions on the bag, and water in immediatly with plenty of water.

I am sorry to hear about the lawn. I hope you can get it back in shape. I keep my fingers crossed.
