QuestionI have 4 crepe myrtles that appear to be healthy but the blooms are minimal. What and when do I need to feed them?
AnswerFertilizer can help bring vigor back to a crepe myrtle, but do not overdo it.
In the spring sprinkle fertilizer formulated for acidifying effects (such as Espoma's Holytone) on the ground. Use about 1/2 lbs for a large bush (less for a smaller bush). Repeat with half that amount in early August. Water in well. Keep fertilizer away from trunk and leaves. Spread fertilizer evenly on the ground around it.
Also make sure to mulch well around the shrub and do any pruning in very early spring before buds form or you cut off any new flower buds.
These plans also do best if watered regularily (a deep soaking once per week or every 2nd week especially in very hot months).
