fertilizing lawn and trees

Question
Two Questions Keith,     1) I have a few Apple trees that aren t doing well,   the leaves look like the tree is dying.  Last year we had a winter month problem in New England but I see no evidence of that.  Ton of rain this year, I have never fertilzed these trees and they are smaller ones,  about 8 ft. tall. SUggestions?    2) I am on my second year of a new backyard.  Because of the grade,  the amount of top soil was minimal that could be brought in.  The yard is better this year than last but still not real thick.  I decided to overseed and just use starter fertilzer this spring.   I was thinking of just using miracle grow on it via a garden hose sprayer (once every few weeks)  to keep it well feed.  The underlying soil is fairly heavy in clay.  Its green,  just trying to thickien it up.  One area can hold standing water after a rain.

Answer
Fertilize fruit trees in late spring using 10-10-10 spread evenly under the canopy of the tree (dripline). However, the problems explained do not appear to be related to lack of fertilizer. I recommend having an arborist taking a look at the trees.

I recommend fertilizing the lawn lightly in spring (which you did already) and then fertilize more heavily in fall when the grass will gain most energy for future. Fertilize again in early september and late october. Do not fertilize during hot summer months. A single miracle grow fertilizer application (sprayer) can be used mid june if you feel the grass is not growing as actively and is turning light green, but do not do this regularily through summer. You do more harm than good with fertilizer in summer on a cool season lawn.
