if you are an advid gardener/or have loads of free epson salt then pursue the epson salt route. i always recommend using professionally formulated fertilizer products for your plants. companies spend millions of $$$ to research their products and get all kind of nutrients good for plants incorporated into them. i especially use and recommend espoma fertilizer products. i've had great success w/them. they carry hollytone for acid loving evergreens and deciduous plants, rosetone for roses, gardentone for veggie and flower plants, etc.. other companies like scotts, peters, hoffman, etc. produce good fertilizers also. there is less chance of damaging your plants when you use brand name products vs home remedies.
good luck
