rose/azelia

Question
I have a rose bush in the same bed as 4 azelias.
Can I use the same fertilizer for all? The rose is about 3 feet from the nearest azelia.

Answer
Yes you can, but the fertilizer amounts vary from the two plants.

Azaleas do best with a single application each year. Roses are heavier feeders and should be fertilized regularily through the growing season.

Azaleas like soils which are slightly acidic (low pH value) and if you use a fertilizer which makes the soil more acidic, they will prefer this. Roses also grow well in slightly acidic soil, but not to the same extend.

I recommend a fertilizer called HOLYTONE (by Espoma). It is an organic fertilizer usually purchased in 1 lb or 5 lbs bags. It contain cottonseed meal which will acifidy the soil. You can use it both on azaleas and roses in early spring when the azaleas are flowering.

Then switch to another "rose" fertilizer and use that one on the rose only another 1-2 times, with 2-3 months interval. Do not fertilize too late into fall.
