I know you have been asked...

Question
I know you have been asked about pet feces as fertilizer before. I see that you maintain a pretty strong stance on the NO side.  If I understand correctly, there are microorganism and salt content issues not easily remedied by the average home owner.

However, is it possible on a larger scale?  How about the collected waste from an animal shelter? If these large amounts are composted would they be a viable fertilizer?

I am new to this and am not even sure what questions to ask.  I just know there might be a resource with all that poop and would it be viable to use it for profit or in the least a marketing tool for a shelter.

Answer
There are special composters intended for composting dog and cat feces. The requirements will be high temperatures meassured consistently through the entire process. I recommend contacting your local county extension office for more information. You may also need a local permit to do this commercially. Sorry that I can not help any further. I do not have any commercial experience with this type of composting.
