Fertilizing Azealeas and Hydrangeas

Question
Dear sir.
When is the best time to fertilize Encore Azealeas
and Hydrangeas? And with what organic fertilizer ?
And is there a certain procedure?
Thanking you in advance,
Ernesto

Answer
Fertilize in spring right after the azaleas has finished flowering. You can fertilize the hydrangea at the same time.

I recommend a pre-formulated organic product called Hollytone (produced by a company called Espoma). Any larger garden center should stock these. It contain cottonseed meal which has the effect of acidifying the soil (lowering the pH) which azaleas prefer.

This also makes Hydrangea macrophylla blooms turn clear blue. If you prefer that the flowers turn pink, then use  products like "Espoma plant tone" or "Espoma flower tone" and add a handfull of lime at the same time. If you hydrangea is one with bright red flowers, or white flowers, then just use the hollytone (these flowers wont turn color).

I like to take a small handfull and apply under the canopy of the stems. Distribute it evenly under the plant. If you have mulched around the plants, it helps to remove the mulch first (does not have to be a big deal, just take some fertilizer between your fingers and thumb and with the outside of your hand, push the mulch aside while you drop the fertilizer a little at a time on the soil. Then go after and replace the mulch when finished).

Water well after application. The water will bring the fertilizer down to the roots.

There are probably other brands other than Espoma, and a good garden center will be able to guide you. However, in our area, this is the most widely sold organic product line and they are available in small 5 lbs bags which makes it very easy (no I don't work for them!! *LOL*)

Good luck.
Kenneth
