when to fertilize

Question
i live in georgia and can't get my extension agent to tell me when to put our fertilizer on my common bermuda lawn.  it is even worse on a preventive insectiside schedule.  it is a regular 5000 sq ft lawn.  can you help?  thanks.

Answer
A bermuda lawn grow best during the warm months (80 degrees-95 degrees F) but fertilizing during very hot months will typically lead problems.

I recommend that you fertilize your lawn once in spring after the grass has green up and started to grow on it's own. A late summer or early fall lawn fertilization is then the only other application needed. Typically 6 weeks before your average first frost date is the general guideline, and that would therefore be 2nd half september in most places. A little earlier in the piedmont or mountain areas and a bit later on the coast.

The last application of the year is important. It helps replenish the nutrient supply that was used up over the summer months and build resources for next spring.

I do not recommend using preventiative insecticides on home lawns.
