QuestionMy bedding plants, such as panseys and petunias, have been in for a few weeks (hey, its already summer in Gulfport/Biloxi Miss) and they are growing like crazy ... but they are all going "leggy" or into vines ... not a lot of flowers as usual ... I planted them as I do every year in a brand name potting soil and used a few doses of a "bloom Booster" ... 10-52-10 ... any and all suggestions would be appreciated. THANKS !
Answeri'm in southern, NJ. here's what you should have done prior to planting in the bed areas.
before planting add compost material to the top of the ground 2-4" thick. work it in w/a shovel or roto-tiller to 8-12" down. after planting sprinkle a good granular fertilizer(i like Espoma brand fertilizers - plantone, hollytone, rosetone, etc.) over the ground before mulching w/a good root or shredded hardwood mulch. most plants will do well w/morning sun and afternoon shade. they are the best conditions(sun in AM & cool shade in late PM). marigolds, impatiens, vinca, coleus, and numerous others will do well there. numerous plants will do well in all day sun (marigolds, geraniums, etc.). pansies like morning sun or partial shade. as soon as hot weather arrives they will begin to suffer. petunias love full or partial sun. they won't do well if given too little sunlite. normally they will get long and leggy by hot weather. cut them back 1/2 way when they get too leggy. or next year buy the new variety "wave" petunias - they flower much better and look good throughout the summer.
visit a few local garden centers/nurseries to find someone knowledgeable on landscaping. buy your products from them & they should be glad to help you design and educate you on how to install & maintain the plants in your area. work one area at a time adjusting your taste as you go along. they will recommend soil amendments, proper sun or shade plant varieties, and other products(mulch, fertilizer, etc.) to help you be successful and get a good looking landscape. good luck
