AnswerAnywhere on the stem is fine to cut... you'd be better served to worry about what the pruned plant will look like, so cut with that in mind.
To prolong Hydrangea, once you cut the stemp submerse it IMMEDIATELY into boiling water for just a second or two, then move to cool water all the way up to the neck.
This breaks any air bubble caught in the stems and helps the head from drooping.
