drying hydrangeas

Question
Hi,

I have been trying to dry the flowers from my plant for 2 years. I have tried drying them upside down they wilted. I googled it and said to wait until the flower was more mature. So I waited and cut flowers that bloomed at different times. They wilted. If I wait too long the flower gets brown. What's up. Everyone I talk to says this is so easy but it is something that I can't get. I live in MA.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Cathy.  This is really one of those hit or miss things.  Much of it depends on the variety of hydrangea you're working with.  But I find what seems to preserve them most reliably is to just stand them up in a vase or bucket without water.  Keep them in a cool, dry place, and you should have dried hydrangeas that still look alive in a couple of weeks.  But a dry, cool area is the key.  Otherwise, they wilt.
