QuestionThis spring I had planted some bulbs in some outdoor pots. They grew and I even had two blooms. After the flowers closed up, the bloom has simply closed up and sort of turned into a pod of some sorts. How should I tend to the plant or the closed up bloom. Is there anything I need do for the health of the plant or the closed up bloom?
AnswerYou can remove the bloom at the base of the stem. However, leave all the leaves in place, unless they turn yellow, at which time they can be removed. Although there is no more flower growth at this time, the tubers (bulbs) are growing, and they require energy harvested by the leaves. Continue to water the plants as you did while they were in bloom.
You should bring the tubers inside if you don't live in a tropical or sub-tropical climate, after the first frost. Most of the leaves should have passed by that time, and any foliage left won't stand up to the frost. It can be removed. The tubers should be removed from the soil and allowed to dry for a few days to prevent rotting, and then be stored in a cool, dark, dry place for at least the next couple of months. You can repot them in the spring.
