QuestionHi. I need help identifying a flower. I'm pretty sure it is some type of exotic flower. If you know the specifics such as variety, species, etc. that would be helpful.

AnswerHi, Jake. The picture is a little small, but from what I can make out, it appears to be a Rose of Sharon. These grow on shrubs/trees right around this time of year in North America. It is a hardier type of Hibiscus. These are winter hardy to temperatures even below 0. They're a favorite because they bloom late in the summer, when most other flowering plants have passed bloom. They also are wonderful for attracting butterflies. The botanical name of the Rose of Sharon is hibiscus syriacus. If the color I'm getting from the picture you provided is accurate, it looks like it is probably a variety known as Blue Bird.
Some species of Hibiscus are very tropical and are limited to surviving outdoors in Hawaii and the southern parts of the United States. The Rose of Sharon looks identical, but they tend to have smaller blooms. Some varieties of hibiscus can have a span of 12 inches or wider.
