QuestionMs. Abbott
Would you know if broccoli and cauliflower can be grown in the state of Kansas with good results?
AnswerHey Uncle Duke,
Yes broccoli and cauliflower should grow in your climate. They like cool, well drained soil that is rich, loamy in texture with neutral pH (6.0-6.8).
So some soil preparation in your garden: Dig in a few inches of compost or aged manure, shredded leaves and lime before planting. Use compost or manure tea at bud formation time
Space plants 18 inches apart; they can be started April to mid July; transplants at 6-8 weeks. Set out before they reach 4-6 leaf stage. Succession plant every 2 weeks.
It is best to water them at the base of the plants as once the leaves grow large overhead watering may not reach the plant roots.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Happy Gardening,
Catherine
