QuestionI have a large round butternut squash growing on the same vine as my regular shaped butternut squash. Is this round squash ok to eat? It looks like a small to medium size pumpkin.
AnswerWhat probably happened is that the flower was cross-pollinated by the bees. The squash will still be good for eating, it just may taste a little different than the one growing normally.
By the way, breeders have produced a new butternut squash that is round. It is supposedly sweeter than the original, but I have not grown that variety yet. You can view all of the different varieties on the Park Seed or Burpee websites. Both companies send out free catalogs every year if you sign up.
Have a great weekend.
