Thanx alot
AnswerWhen to start planting a garden in northern Alberta depends on the weather and what seeds you want to plant. If there is no chance of a late frost and your soil is ready you can start planting potatoes, peas, carrots, beets, lettuce, chard from seed and cabbage family crops (which are best put out as transplants) right now. Seeds will be okay if it is still cold, they will just take a little longer to germinate but will grow with time. If you are putting out transplants and the weather is still quite cold make sure you protect the young transplants by covering them with an old bed sheet or blanket at night.
I would hold off on planting any hot loving plants like beans, squash, cucumbers, corn, peppers and tomatoes until night time temperatures are consistently above 12 degrees. Traditionally hot loving veggies are planted after the May long weekend. A good rule of thumb is if you can walk comfortable around your garden soil in barefoot then your soil is warm enough for planting the hot loving veggies.
