Onions and beets

Question
We have an unusually large organic, veg garden. we are vegetariaons and grow most of our own food. WE have not had our soil tested. We are wondering what might be missing from our soils that prevents us from growing decent sized onions and beets. Our carrots are a good size.
We have large compost bins 6' X 6' and use a lot of spoiled hay as mulch.

Answer
The most likely nutrient that is essential for beets and onions is potassium. Magnesium is also a possibility. Since you are adding compost to the garden, I'm sure that your plants are getting ample nutrition. However, depending on the structure of the compost, it is possible one of these nutrients is missing.

One other possibility is the ph level. Depending on what part of the country in which you live, the levels will vary. The ideal level is 7.

I would definitely take samples from 5 different areas of the garden. Mix them thoroughly and take them to your local nursery to be tested. It is most likely a simple solution once you know for sure what is lacking.

Good luck, and have a nice week.

Regards,

Mike
