QuestionI have a large (66 acre) piece of land, but only part of it is cleared. While we gradually clear more of the land, I'd like to prepare a plot for a vegetable garden in the next few days. One of the areas I'm considering is above the new (less than 1 year in use) septic field, which would solve another problem of keeping vehicle traffic off this area. Is this safe and/or wise?
AnswerPaula, generally, I would not recommend planting a garden in a septic field. The bacteria could be harmful and transmit to your vegetables. However, since the levels may be very low, my suggestion would be to take 5 soil samples from different areas of the field and take them to your local nursery or EPA office to have tested. It is better to be sure than sorry.
Good luck, and have a good week.

Mike
