QuestionI live in Jim Thorpe PA (Poconos). This is my first attempt at growing butternut squash. I have 5 gourds from the one plant that look like they will be ready to harvest soon. The problem is that the side that touches the ground is a rusty color. The skin does not seem to be broken but it is is scaley to touch. Is this a problem?
AnswerMonica, it is not a problem since the squash will still retain its flavor and texture. All that occurs is a slight discoloring and roughening of the skin. But I do recommend slightly turning the squash to rotate the portion touching the ground. I do this every three days once they start turning orange just to prevent the discoloration.
Good luck, and enjoy your weekend.

Mike
