Questionsquash/cucumber ?
QUESTION: i planted cucumbers, squash, watermelons, corn and onion, this summer, these vegetables are growing great despite the heat in Texas, they are very large in fact, but i don't know what it is. can you help ?
ANSWER: Dear Rick,
I'm not sure what kind of squash you planted, but the picture looks like a cross between a cucumber and a squash or melon. I got those one year by accident. Melons, cucumbers, and squash will cross pollinate if planted very close together. I now have a garden grid that keeps all these vining fruits and veggies at a reasonable distance with non-vining veggies planted between.
I hope this helps.
Kind Regards,

QUESTION: Thank you K.D, I was worried about tasting them, so i had a co-worker cut and taste it she said it tasted like a cucumber and smelled like a cantaloupe. it has an orange color inside, and they grow about 20 inches long.
what can you do with them ?
AnswerDear Rick,
I'm sorry I should have told you as long as there were no gourds involved in the possible mix, the "hybrids" are edible, they just may not be terribly delicious. Now, a cucaloupe as we'll call it may be delicious just sliced fresh or make a wonderful salad. I've got a salad suggestion and this is only suggestion. I'd slice one up and mix in some strawberries for an unusual summer salad. I wouldn't recommend freezing, but they might make some good pickles. Maybe a tangy sweet kind of pickle. I'd suggest Lime Pickles or using the cucaloupe in the place of watermelon rinds for Watermelon Rind Pickles. If you are interested in making pickles, I'd be happy to share my recipes. Take care.
