QuestionHello Mike. I am new to gardening and have a question on times for planting yellow straight-neck squash and cucumbers (pickle-type). I live in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It is really dry here until about May. We will be having our last freeze in the next week or so, although it has been in the upper 60's to mid 80's, down to around the low 40's at night for the last couple of months. I will be planting these from seed purchased at our local feed store. Also, what about watermelons?
AnswerWhen seeding directly, squash, cucumbers, and watermelons can all be sowed one week prior to the last expected spring frost. Since the weather is so unpredictable here in the NE US, I always wait an extra week just to play safe. Just be sure to amend the soil with organic matter and to start fertilizing every 2 weeks with a fertilizer high in phosphorus once you see the first blooms. Otherwise, these are very easy vegetables to grow.
One last piece of advice is to space the plants properly. All vining plants should be spaced 2 feet apart to avoid crowding. This will ensure larger fruit and a bigger harvest.
Good luck, and please write again if I can ever provide assistance.
Regards,
Mike
