QuestionIf my daughter brings me a couple of dried tomatoes can I take the seeds out and ferment them for planting?
AnswerDonna, it all depends on whether the plants are hybrids or heirlooms. Heirlooms will always replicate identical to the parent plant. Hybrids, however, will only carry over a limited number of characteristics.
If you're not sure, and you really like this particular variety, it is worth the effort to give it a try. Even if it is a hybrid, the tomatoes may still turn out to be just as delicious. Just be sure to let the seeds dry out for a few days. Place them in a zip-lock bag to keep them fresh, and store them in the back of the refrigerator for a few weeks to simulate dormancy. You can then start them indoors under fluorescent lighting or direct sow them if you live in a warmer climate.
Good luck, and have a nice weekend.

Mike
