QuestionWhat is time to grow garlic in hilly areas, and what is the procedure to grow and maintain it.
AnswerThe best time to plant garlic is in late fall, just before the first hard freeze, However, you can plant garlic in early spring for a mid-fall harvest.
It is a very easy plant to maintain. Just plant the cloves in a loamy soil and add compost to the soil as a top dressing. Do not fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer, as this promotes foliage and small bulbs. Instead, apply a granular fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium sometime in early July. That is the only application that is needed.
Once the plants produce a seed pod at the top of the stalk, cut off the pod. This stimulates the plant to direct all of its energy to producing a larger bulb. Once the stalks turn brown and fall over, gently dig the bulbs from the ground. Allow them to dry for one week before using.
