QuestionI HAVE PRETTY RICH SOIL I USUALLY THROW SOME DIRT FROM THE PASTURE IN EVERY YEAR BUT WHAT IS THE BEST FERTILIZER FOR TOMATOES AND HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD TOMATOES BE FERTILIZED
AND MY JALEPENO PLANTS DO REAL WELL BUT WHEN SHOULD I PICK THEM TO WHERE THEY WONT CAUSE A MELT DOWN IN MY MOUTH WHEN I EAT THEM
AnswerTomatoes need a fertilizer high in phosphorus. I first supplement my soil every spring and throughout the growing season with organic matter, such as compost and aged manure. But once they start producing their first fruits, I spray them with a water-soluble solution high in phosphorus. I then spray them again one more time four weeks later. Just be sure to avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen as they tend to promote lush foliage at the expense of blooming. You can purchase tomato/pepper fertilizer at any reputable garden center.
Jalapenos should be picked young. The longer you leave them on the vine, the hotter they get. This is especially true once they begin turning red. I never let them get beyond 2" before harvesting.
I hope this answered your questions. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.
