QuestionHi, Mike,
I'm trying to protect my basil, soybeans, tomatoes, etc. with black cinders. I've never tried those and they're actually small volcanic rocks. I've read that lava rocks act as a barrier against slugs. Since this is the first time I'm trying this technique, do you think the black cinders would be effective against slugs? I talked to the garden expert at Home Depot and he never heard of using volcanic rocks as a deterrent.
AnswerSean, slugs have been a major problem for me for years. They seem to thrive here in the Midwest due to the wet/cool conditions in spring. I've read numerous articles on the subject but have never heard of using black cinders as a deterrent. I know that using any abrasive material will deter them. I have used diatomaceous earth successfully, which are fossilized remains from the ocean.
In recent years, I have made it a practice to till the soil thoroughly every spring. This destroys any eggs left in the soil. I then sprinkle iron phosphate in the bed. This is an organic product that is very effective against slugs and snails. It is commonly sold in garden centers under the names Escar-Go and Sluggo. I have attached a link for your review.

I hope this information helps. Good luck, and have a wonderful New Year.

Mike
