stunted tomatoes

Question
i have been growing ugly tomatoes for the last 4 years and they have always bee an extra large and good tasting.  The vines have always been about 5 ft tall.  this year we planted them in a newly formed garden that had been cultivated and top soil worked in.  The tomatoes are getting only has big as a small tomato and not growing any bigger.  vines have grown to the same height as last year.    please   help.....

Answer
One of two things are most likely occurring. Either the soil is not draining properly or it is lacking phosphorus and magnesium. You mentioned that this is a new garden bed. Hopefully it is a raised bed comprised primarily of organic matter such as peat, compost, and aged manure. This combination will improve drainage and provide the necessary nutrients for good growth. If not, you will need to apply an organic mulch of shredded leaves, peat, or compost around each plant. You will also need to feed the plants with a water-soluble fertilizer high in phosphorus. Phosphorus stimulates blooms and larger fruit. Definitely avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen as this tends to promote lush foliage at the expense of a robust harvest.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Mike
