QuestionSeveral years ago as a kid, I saved the seed pits of cherries I had eaten and recently, I went ahead in trying to grow them, but lately, they're just growing up to look like grass. Is this typical? Am I likely to grow my own cherries?
AnswerWilliam:
Yes, you will get a cherry tree from the pits, but the cherries will be nothing like the ones you ate. Domestic cherry trees are propagated from grafts. Plants grown from seed will have the properties of the rootstock rather than the graft, and the fruits are likely to be bitter or sour.
