QuestionMy yard grows roses, camillias and geraniums beautifully. So I assume my soil is on the acid side. I can never get yarrow to thrive or even survive for long. Now I have read that yarrow needs an alkaline soil (I think 5.5). Dill is the other plant I love and cannot get to grow, now I am wondering if it is the acid ph that is the problem?
AnswerDear Susan,
I have always had difficulty with yarrow, when I have beautiful roses, so I would concur with your assessment. As for dill, I've found it to be rather hearty most places. My recommendation would be to start it in a pot with just potting soil or top soil and then try transplanting it with the potted soil to see if that helps with the pH. Dill grows quite well in a pot, by the way and they can be set in the yard, if the soil is just not conducive to whatever you want to grow. I keep a number of herbs potted, not only for the difference in the soil, but some herbs can be quite invasive and that keeps them contained, as well.
I wish you well.
Kind Regards,
