Question
white residue on soil
Hi Mike
I've been noticing a white residue on my tomato soil lately; I've enclosed a picture; do you know what it may be? For info:
- It's 30+ degrees celsius every day here
- I water thoroughly once in the morning, leave the plant all day in the sun, and don't water again until the next morning
- I've been using water solouble fertilizer once a week in the recommended amounts on the packet
Thanks for your help! Please let me know too, if you think my watering methods are unsuitable! I've been hearing all kinds of different things about when to water
AnswerKay, it could be a fungus or the residue from the water soluble fertilizer. Fertilizer should only be applied once every 14 days. Many of the companies recommend a more frequent application, but keep in mind that is part of their strategy to sell more product. The fact is that too much fertilization can do more harm than good. Most of the commercial fertilizers have a high concentration of salt. This will leave a residue on the plants or soil. My advice is to cut back to every two or three weeks. That will be sufficient, especially if you amend your soil with organic matter such as compost, manure, and /or peat.
In regard to watering, you should always water in the morning. Evening watering can result in fungal diseases since the water has less chance to evaporate. So stay with your current routine and you should be fine.
One piece of advice when watering. Always water deeply and only when needed. Excess watering causes saturation of the soil which in turn prevents the roots from absorbing nutrients and oxygen. Shallow watering will result in the roots reaching for the soil instead of down to the subsoil. Most plants only require 1 to 2 inches of water per week. I water when the top two inches of the soil dries out. The frequency also depends on the temperatures and environment. Mulching your plants with shredded leaves, bark, or straw is highly recommended to cool the soil and retain moisture. This will result in having to water less often.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.
Regards,
Mike
