QuestionCan I trim back the huge leaves to get more sunlight to the vegetable part? I have had about ten already and now they have stopped growing. The leaves surrounding the bottom part I think are blocking the sun.
AnswerI never recommend cutting leaves of squash unless you cut them right at the base. My reasoning is that open stems are a clear invitation for insects, specifically the squash borer. These insects can prove fatal to the plant.
When I have squash that grows to maturity but hasn't fully turned green, I will harvest the squash and leave it out on the deck where it will fully mature within a few days. This has no adverse affect on the taste or texture of the zucchini.
Good luck, and write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Mike
