HELP MY TOMATO PLANT HAS BET

Question
Hi,
This is my first tomato growing experience, so please forgive my niavete when I thought it would so easy. I decided to use the upside down hanging plant method as I beleived, as the commercials said, that it would be foolproof. Well everything was going great, until the bottom of the tomatoes started getting mushy. From what I can tell they have developed what you experts would refer to as BET. I can't mess with the plant too much as it is now encapseled in this plastic hanging device so trying to add anything to the soil would be impossible, less I risk breaking the plant. Do you have any suggestions on what I might be able to add to the water or perhaps spray on them that would help? Your advice would be much appreciated. I'd be thrilled to have just one pretty red tomato to brag about.

Sinceely yours,

Tomatoless in PA.

Answer
I think you mean BER - blossom-end rot. All you can do now is keep the plants from drying out, as it is a combination of calcium deficiency (solved by the addition of lime) and inconsistent watering. You can usually cut off the rotted bottom and still eat the rest of the tomato, so it won't be a total loss.
