QuestionI am new at gardening. I planted the seeds for my cantaloupe the end of May,I have not seen anything start sprouting as of yet is that normal, and how long do they take to start coming up? I have planted them on mounds and have put mulch around them. I was concerned because temps have not been that high here yet, i live in the Midwest. Please Advise and if you have any other pointers on what to do once they come up? Thank you Kim
AnswerKim:
May is too early for cantaloupe in the Midwest. Try replanting them now. If the soil is not yet warm (65-70), lay some black plastic over it (water first if it is dry) for a week or so to warm it up. You can leave the plastic down and just cut Xs where you want to plant the seed. You do not need to plant them in mounds. Planting in "hills" just refers to groups of plants, you can grow two or three vines in the same hole. They may take a week to come up.
