QuestionMy community is planning a garden. I plan to grow about 4 types of veggies & 3 fruits. I'm wondering what kind of fertilizer I should buy & how to even apply it. I know nothing at all about fertilizers. They said maybe we'd be getting some mulch from leaves & shrubbery, but I don't know if that's enough organic matter. I want it all organic.
Thank you!
AnswerJani-
there are many types/brands of organic fertilizer available. I would get what is available where you live. Granular fertilizers are usually best incorporated into the soil in the fall, or at least one month prior to planting. Liquids can be applied at any time, and I like them for watering in transplants. You should follow the directions on the package as far as how much to use. Also, different plants have different feeding requirements, so its hard to give general rules. Since it is a community garden, it might be a good idea to have the soil tested, that way everyone would know how much of what nutrients are needed. If enough organic matter is added, in a year or two you may not even need additional fertilizer.
