planting tomtoes and vegetables

Question
I live in the north east and I usually do my planting after mothers day but it seems like my tomatoes dont fruit until late in july am i able to plant them early so I can produce tomatoes a little longer. I usually grow super sonics and I do not use any insecticides

Answer
Dear Louise,
I don't know for sure which zone you are in, but I'm in zone 7 and my garden, including tomatoes are planted.  My suggestion regarding the shorter growing season would be this.  As long as the nights don't get below 32, you're okay to plant, but the plants don't really thrive until the weather is warmer and more constant.  If you choose to plant now, and the temperature dips, just cover them that night.  The ground should be getting warm enough.  Mother's Day is only 3 weeks away.  Can't hurt to try it and stretch your growing season, just a bit.
I wish you well.
Kind Regards,
KD
