QuestionHello, K D:
Here in Eastern Tennessee I am late in roto-tilling the small garden plat (I missed the Good Friday planting day due to rainy weather, etc.). The small plat now has many weeds but there are "volunteer" tomato roots also among the weeds. Will I kill the "volunteer" roots when I roto-till the whole plat? I'm guessing that those "volunteer" roots have enough strength and time to germinate again.
Many thanks. Roger
AnswerDear Roger,
If you till the volunteers, they will probably die, unless you work around them. I have a suggestion, but not knowing the lay of the plat, it may be of no help. If you can till most of it, and leave the volunteer tomatoes untilled, you could get a bale or two of straw and put the flakes around the tomato plants. That would kill most of the weeds right around them, and if they are already growing, they probably don't need tilling anyway. I've gotten to where I do that every year in the fall. I scatter the old hay or straw over the garden spot, and it really impedes the growth of weeds the next garden season.
I hope you get a bumper crop of tomatoes this year.
Kind Regards,
KD
