QuestionI live in Penna on the 9th floor of a high rise over looking Valley Forge Park 19406. Last year I planted some pepers and tomatoes in pots. The yield was awful. Someone suggested that since I'm on the 9th floor bees couldn't get to mt plants to do what they need to do. If that were the case then veg could not be grown in green houses, right? I was interested in trying those hanging planters for tomatoes, squash and peppers. If in fact I do need bees can I attract them 9 floors? If so what would I plant in my now unsed pots? Black eye susans?
AnswerBill,
Don't give up on your veggies. I am not sure of how you started but I will let you know what I would do in your situation. First, make sure you start with good soil, a 50/50 soil/compost mix. Then buy your seedlings. Peppers and Tomatoes love the sunshine so make sure they get all they can. Keep them watered and fertilized, the organic fertilizer from Miracle Grow you can purchase at Home Depot will work for you. When the blooms start appearing take a damp swab or cotton ball and gently swab the inside of each one using the same swab. This will pollinate your plants. You should see results within about 4 days.
I hope this helps.
