QuestionHi,
I wonder how big a potatocrop will be if you grow a potato seedling from:
1) One true seed.
2) One sprout.
3) One cutting.
4) One tuber.
Sincerely/ B. Osterberg
AnswerDear B.
The size of your crop is going to depend more on your soil and the potato variety than how you start it. Starting potato from true seed adds about 3-4 weeks to the harvest date, I've never grown them that way myself. Treat them as you would tomato seedlings.
I've read that you actually get better yields with smaller pieces of tuber, I guess that's what you mean by a cutting, than with a whole potato, but I'm not sure why. I assume by sprout you mean removing the sprout from the potato itself? I wouldn't advise that, as the potato provides the initial food for the growing sprout, just as the cotyledon does for the seed.
The rule of thumb is 10# of potato/pound planted - if soil, water and weather are all at optimum conditions.
