Question
Lower level of new gar
I am in the process of building a fairly large (450 SF) garden in three tiers enclosed by a block wall. To insure drainage I am putting 4 inches of foundation rock covered by filter fabric. In the rock are perforated pipes leading to an exterior drain. The massive placement of this is something I want to do right the first time. There is no rocket science in this itself but I am concerned that I leave enough space above the filter fabric up to the top of the block for topsoil. Will one foot of topsoil be enough or should I provide more. Now is the time to make this decision because after a ton (literally) of rock and drain pipe is installed I don't want to have to move it!!
Thanks

AnswerRoger, I never recommend adding straight topsoil to my beds. Topsoil is generally deplete of the needed nutrients to grow a successful garden. I only add compost, aged manure, and peat. For a garden your size, that could get quite expensive. I would therefore add a 50% blend of topsoil and the organic mix described above. One foot in depth is sufficient.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
